Ochre Colour Pottery (OCP)

Ochre Colour Pottery (OCP) is a Bronze Age ceramic tradition of the Upper Gangetic Plain and adjacent areas, dating broadly to the late third to early second millennium B.C., and constituting one of the most discussed archaeological cultures in the IJA corpus. The journal’s sustained focus on OCP addresses its geographical extent, its diagnostic pottery types, its relationship to copper hoard weapons, and its significance for understanding the transition from Chalcolithic to early Iron Age cultures of the Indo-Gangetic heartland.

  • Saipai - first confirmed context in which OCP and copper hoard weapons were found together in a controlled excavation
  • Hastinapur - B.B. Lal’s original excavation found OCP at the lowest levels; subsequent surface finds of copper hoard weapons confirm the OCP horizon

Key Findings

  1. Diagnostic ceramics: OCP is defined by its ochre or orange-buff surface, often resulting from firing conditions or post-depositional leaching. The burnished variant discovered at Barood Khera (Vol 1, No. 3) extended the known repertoire.
  2. Geographic distribution: The Aligarh–Hathras gazetteer and pottery drawings studies (Vols. 2 and 6) establish that OCP is densely distributed across western U.P. from the Yamuna corridor eastward to the middle Gangetic Plain.
  3. Bronze Age date: Carbon dates from the Nigohi copper hoard (Vol 7, No. 4) of 2328–1619 B.C. place the OCP cultural horizon squarely in the Bronze Age, overlapping with the later Harappan period.
  4. Settlement pattern: The 2022 synthesis (Vol 7, No. 2) reconstructs the layout of OCP villages: huts arranged around a central space, weapons concentrated in specific areas implying communal storage of an arsenal, consistent with organised village-level military capacity.
  5. Artistic expressions: Copper hoard weapons from OCP contexts carry engraved motifs - geometric patterns, birds, horned figures - that have been connected to the Garuda cult, proto-Shiva iconography, and the Skanda/Murugan deity complex (Vols. 8, No. 1 and 2).
  6. Ring currency: The bangle hoards associated with OCP (Vol 10, No. 2 and No. 3) demonstrate a weight-standard ring economy that anticipates the historical kārṣāpana coin.
  7. Relationship to PGW: The Gazetteer literature consistently positions OCP as preceding the Painted Grey Ware (PGW) horizon, representing the proto-historic substrate into which PGW and eventually NBPW cultures emerged.
