Much is said about the pros and cons of family in India, both joint and nuclear. But very few attempts have been made to study Hindu family as it is now, in its various dimensions and along with all the problems that plague it in many ways. Is the Hindu family no longer living a life as it was supposed to do in the classical Hindu era? Has it deviated from the model life given in the shastras? And if so, then is it Hindu any longer? Are there any ways possible in which it can evolve into new ways and yet maintain the core and the soul of being Hindu? It is often claimed that the basic unit in a Hindu society is not an individual but a family. Does this apply on Hindu society anymore? To arrive at any conclusion regarding Hindu families today, one has to rely on either textual analysis of shastras and see it normatively, or rely on anecdotal evidence. At Bodha, we aim to change this and introduce statistical and metrical dimensions to the ways in which we talk about Hindu family. We aim to study Hindu family in all its dimensions from sociological perspectives suitable to the unique cultural make up of Hindu society.
