Purva Paksha
Purva paksha (literally “the prior position”) is the classical Indian philosophical method of engaging with an opposing view before refuting it — the discipline of understanding an opponent’s argument more thoroughly than they themselves might, in order to engage with it at its strongest rather than its weakest. In the history of Indian philosophy, this produced an intellectual tradition of extraordinary rigor: Ādi Śaṅkarācārya dismantled rival positions precisely because he had studied them with full seriousness. Bodha applies this method to Western institutions, Abrahamic theologies, and Enlightenment epistemology — not to reject them wholesale but to understand their internal logic, their unspoken metaphysical commitments, and their specific inadequacies when applied to Hindu civilizational conditions. Purva paksha is the intellectual counterpart of svayambodha: while self-knowledge requires looking inward, purva paksha requires looking outward with equal rigor.
