Svayambodha
Svayambodha — knowing oneself — is not individual self-awareness in the modern therapeutic sense but civilizational self-knowledge: understanding what Hindu civilization has actually built, thought, and transmitted across four thousand years of recorded history. The tragedy of the colonial encounter was precisely that it succeeded in making Hindus strangers to their own heritage — educated in European history, European philosophy, European aesthetics, while the Upaniṣads, the Arthaśāstra, the Nāṭyaśāstra, and the tradition of philosophical inquiry that produced them became exotic and inaccessible. Svayambodha is the project of repair: recovering the actual content of the civilizational inheritance, understanding it on its own terms rather than through comparative frameworks that position it as a variant of Western universals, and then asking what resources this inheritance offers for addressing the present. It is the necessary precondition for any genuine Hindu renaissance.
