साल्वावयव-प्रत्यग्रथ-कलकूट-अश्मकाद् इञ्

Adhyāya 4 · Pāda 1 · Rule 173

The affix iñ comes in the sense of descendant after a word which denotes any sub-division of the country sālva and after the words 1. pratyagratha 2. kalakūṭa and 3. aśmaka, when these are names of countries and of tribes.,

उदुम्बरास्तिलखला मद्रकारा युगन्धराः ।
भुलिङ्गाः शरदण्डाश्च साल्वावयवसंज्ञिताः ॥\

The word साल्वा is the name of a Kshatriya woman, her son will be साल्वेयः 4.1.121 formed by ढक्; also साल्वः formed by अण् ॥ The dwelling place of साल्व will be also साल्वः which is the name of a country.

The sub-divisions of the country called साल्व are six, viz Udumbarah, Tilakhalah, Madrakarah, Yugandharah, Bhulingah and Saradandah. The patronymic from these will be: औदुम्बरिः, तैलखलिः, माद्रकारिः, यौगन्धरिः, भौलिङ्गिः and शारदण्डिः ॥ So also the affix 'in' will be added to the words 'Pratyagratha' &c. As प्रात्यग्रथिः, कालकूटिः and आश्मकिः ॥ The affix has the force also of 'the king there of'. As औदुम्बरो राजा ॥ According to Mahabhashya, the words Busa, Ajamidha, and Ajakanda also take this affix, as बौसः, आजमीढिः and आजकन्दिः ॥,
