कुम्भपदीषु च

Adhyāya 5 · Pāda 4 · Rule 139

The words kumbhapadī etc. have been formed by the similar elision of the a of pāda,

The forms कुंभपदी &c, are formed by eliding the final अ of पाद, and then substituting पद् for पात् before the feminine affix ई by 4.4.130. This substitution takes place only before the feminine affix ङीप्, and no where else, as कुम्भपदी, शतपदी ॥ Those words in the list, the first members of which denote an object of comparison or a numeral, would have elided अ by 5.4.138 or 5.4.140. In their case, this sutra teaches the invariable affixing of ङीप् to such words; so that the optional rule 4.1.8 does not apply to them.
