Uṇ. 4. 132] 1 The hand; dānena pāṇirna tu kaṃkaṇena (vibhāti) Bh. 2. 71; often at the end of comp. in the sense of ‘carrying in the hand’; as cakraº, khaḍgaº &c.; pāṇiṃ grah or pīḍ ‘to take the hand of, lead to the altar, marry.’ pāṇau kṛ to hold by the hand, mar- ry; pāṇaukaraṇaṃ ‘marriage’.
