Foundations of Indian Culture
Notes from two books on the foundations of Indian culture.
Book 1 - Foundations of Indian Culture, by Shri GC Pande
A 2-volume work that does a thorough coverage of various dimensions of Indian culture - Spiritual Praxis (Sadhana and Paravidya), Symbolism and Expression, Geographical Identity, Economic Ideas and Attitudes, Patterns of Livelihood, Socio-ethical Ideas, Socio-Historical Order.
The vedic religion is not at heart a rain-making or sun-raising magic but rather an insight into the divinity which underlies all phenomena and has been described as a joyous celebration of its epiphany in terms of the cosmos.
Book 2 - Foundations of Indian Culture, by Shri KM Munshi
A masterful book that succinctly covers the core of Indian culture. Provides a beautiful deep-dive into the concept of “ṛta” and how it is central to Indian thought and action.
The first characteristic of culture is continuity. it comes from the past, adjusts to the present, and moves forward to shape the future. the division of culture in relation to time does not, therefore, give a true picture of what it really is.
