वतण्डाच् च

Adhyāya 4 · Pāda 1 · Rule 108

The affix yañ comes in the sense of a gotra (Patronymic) descendant after the word vataṇḍa when meaning a descendant of aṅgirasa,

Thus वातण्ड्यः = आंगिरसः, otherwise वातण्डः ॥

The word वतण्ड occurs both in the Gargadi class 4.1.105 and in the Sivadi class 4.1.112. It would have taken both affixes अञ् and अण्. The present sutra declares that when it means an Angirasa, then वतण्ड will not take अण् of the शिवादि class : and when it does not mean Angirasa, then it takes both these affixes e. g. वातंड्यः and वातंडः any descendant of Vatanda.,
