पूजायां न अनन्तरम्

Adhyāya 8 · Pāda 1 · Rule 37

But not so when these particles yāvat and yathā immediately precede the verb an denote 'praise'.,

That is, the verb loses its accent, and becomes anudatta. Thus यावत् प॒॒च॒॒ति॒॒ शोभनम्, यथा पचति शोभनम्, यावत् करोति चारु ॥

Why do we say when denoting 'praise'? Observe यावद् भुङ्क्ते꣡, यथा भुङ्क्ते꣡ ॥

Why do we say 'immediately'? Observe यावद् देवदत्तः प꣡चति शोभनं, यथा देवदत्तः करो꣡ति चारु ॥ Here the verbs retain their accent by the last sutra.,
