Kekadia - A Case Study on Impact of Conversion on Tribal Society

To understand the very cause of targeting such a village by Christian missionaries.

Kekadia is a tribal majority village in Bhopal district of Madhya Pradesh This village has seen massive conversions to Christianity in the past with a majority of the population being Christian at one point of time. This state of affairs exists in a state which is not known for its Christian population or Christian missionary activities, and near its capital city of Bhopal, in the very district, at the very center of India. The present study at Bodha aims to understand the very cause of targeting such a village by Christian missionaries. This is one of the goals of the study. But the most important part of the story of this village is that most of the families that had converted in Kekadia, have now reverted back to their ancestral religion and dharmic traditions. Most of them are now Hindu.

This project aims to study the psychological, social, economic and political impact of Christian conversions on not just individuals but on their relations with other individuals and society in general. The present study will try to document whether conversion activities bring social strife, or social inclusion, whether they initiate communal disharmony or they give more visibility and participation to the individuals and groups involved; whether they bring economic prosperity or not to the populations concerned. The study will try to judge missionary activity on various socio-political parameters to ascertain the holistic impact of conversion on native society.
